The Lord blessed Shawn & Katie with yet another baby boy on Friday, March 22nd, 2013. Titus Lee Burnham was born at St. John's Hospital in Oxnard, CA at 8:39 pm, weighing 9 pounds, 7 ounces and was 21 inches long. His big brother and sister, Slater & Aspen, were able to come to the hospital on Saturday, 3/23 to see their new baby brother. Shawn & Katie were able to bring Titus home on Sunday, 3/24.

Shawn, Katie, Aspen & Slater spent Thanksgiving week with Shawn's family in Williams, Arizona. Shawn's parents (Gilbert & Judy), and his brother's family (Brian, Tracy, Shawn & Thomas) enjoyed a fun week of seeing man-made wonders like the Hoover Dam and Las Vegas, and even better God-made wonders like the the Grand Canyon, the Painted Desert & the Petrified Forest. They took a train into the Grand Canyon on the first day, but spent most of the time in the big white van, which prompted the family vacation T-shirt!

While in Alabama, Katie was able to visit with both families, and spend some time at the beach. While visiting, Katie had the opportunity to announce her pregnancy to the family (4/1 due date). Shawn, Katie, Aspen & Slater flew to Rome, Italy on July 4th to meet Katie's family and celebrate Katie's parent's 40th wedding anniversary. They all took a cruise from Rome with stops in Taormina, Sicily; Athens, Greece; Ephasus, Turkey; and Chania, Crete. While in Rome, they saw many of the ancient sites including the Colosseum, the Roman Forum and the Pantheon, and some of the ornate Catholic churches, including St. Peter's Basilica. They also toured the Vatican Museum, and enjoyed lots of fountains and gelato from Giolitti's in the hot weather. In Sicily, they took a trip up the volcano Mt. Etna and visited the beautiful town of Taormina. In Greece, they visited the Parthenon and the Acropolis, the Temple of Zeus, and Syntagma Square for the changing of the guard. Their favorite part of the trip was in Turkey, where they visited the ancient ruins of Ephasus and saw the theater that is referenced in Acts 19. Their final stop was in Crete, where they visited the old town of Chania. They had a great trip with the family and enjoyed seeing all of the historical sites.

Aspen & Slater celebrated their birthdays on February 11th. Aspen turned 3 years old and Slater turned 1 year old on 2/8. They had all of the grandparents in town for their birthdays and lots of friends from Church. Shawn's parents, Gilbert & Judy, joined Shawn, Katie, Aspen & Slater for a trip up to Northern California. They visited Silicon Valley & San Francisco, and saw lots of great sights. While in Silicon Valley, they visited several of the Technology Company campuses and the Winchester Mystery House. While in San Francisco, they saw many of the sights along the 49-mile drive, with the Golden Gate Bridge as the highlight. Shawn was also able to visit with a friend from Alabama that now lives in San Francisco, Adam Hammons. Finally, the group drove back to Southern California long the PCH through Big Sur.

On Tuesday, 2/8/2011, The Lord blessed Shawn & Katie with another child: Slater Edward Burnham. He was born in Ventura, CA at 1:58 am, weighing 8 pounds, 10 ounces and was 21 inches long. Slater was able to come home after a day in the hospital and met his big sister, Aspen. Katie's mom, Gigi, came a few days later to stay with the family.

For New Years they went to the Rose Parade with Katie's mom and saw all of the unique floats. At the beginning of January, they met Katie's parents and sister's family at Disneyland, and the guys drover over to Glendale, Arizona to watch Auburn win the BCS National Championship game.

Shawn, Katie & Aspen visited Alabama in late September, 2010. Aspen enjoyed the sugar white beaches of Gulf Shores and the very warm weather for fun pool time. Both sets of grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins were able to visit with them, and they had a great time together. They also experienced some thunderstorms, which are rare at home in California. While there, they were able to share the news that Aspen's younger sibling will be a boy!

Mimi & Pawpaw (Shawn's parents) visited Shawn, Katie and Aspen in July/August for a week. While they were in California, Mimi & Pawpaw went to the Tonight Show with Jay Leno, they all went to Disneyland, they dropped Shawn off at the US Open of Surfing, and they all went to the Pt. Mugu Airshow to see the Thunderbirds. Shawn & Katie surprised his parents with the news that Katie is expecting their second child in February of 2011.

Shawn surprised Katie with a weekend trip to Avalon on Catalina Island for her 30th Birthday. They took a 2 hour boat ride out of Marina Del Rey to the island and had a great time exploring with Aspen. While there, they enjoyed some great food, went on a glass-bottom boat ride, toured the Casino and also toured the back country on the inside of the island. On the way back home, they topped the trip off with a great dinner at the Chart House in Malibu.

While Katie's parents were in California, the group went to the BCS National Championship at the Rose Bowl to watch Alabama win, visited Disneyland, and saw whales on a whale watching trip to the Channel Islands.

Shawn visited Korea for a week to present a paper at the International Conference on Nitride Semiconductors at Jeju Island in October. While he was there, not only did he greatly benefit from the technical conference, but he was also able to surf at Korea's most famous break (Jungmun Beach) with head-high waves from Typhoon Lupit! After the conference, Shawn met his Uncle Dennis and Aunt Noel in Seoul. Their friends, Soyoung and Seonkyeong helped them navigate the city and even took them to several attractions far away from Seoul in Yeoungju. Shawn had a great time, but was happy to see Katie and Aspen when he returned.

Shawn & Katie visited Disneyland with Aspen (her first trip!) on Shawn's birthday. They opened the park up at 8 am and closed it down at 12 am with a nap break in the middle. Although this was one of the busiest days of the year, they were able to ride 19 rides and didn't have to wait long at all. Aspen's favorite ride was Winnie the Pooh, Katie's favorite ride was Indiana Jones, and Shawn's favorite ride was the updated Space Mountain.

Aspen Isabelle Burnham was born to Shawn & Katie Wednesday, February 11th, 2009 at 6:46 am at Community Memorial Hospital in Ventura, California. She weighed 6 lbs, 7 oz, and was 20.5 in long. Although her due date was March 15 and she was born over a month early, Aspen was able to go home with Shawn & Katie Thursday afternoon.

Shawn's family came to visit Shawn & Katie in California for Thanksgiving. They took a trip up to central California and had a great time seeing the state.

Shawn & Katie visited Hawaii for 10 days in late October 2008, spending time on both Oahu and the Big Island of Hawaii. They stayed in Waikiki on Oahu, and Katie attended a Physician's Assistant conference there. While on Oahu, they spent a lot of time with Billy and Karyn Hopper who live on the island. Billy is a pastor at the Honolulu Bible Church. Billy took Shawn surfing on the North Shore of Oahu while Katie was in conference. Shawn was able to surf at Pipeline, Leftovers, Laniakea, and Daystar in waves with up to 15 foot faces. When Katie was finished with her conference, they were able to snorkel at Hanauma Bay, and do other sight-seeing around the island, including the Dole Plantation. After Oahu, they flew to Kona on The Big Island of Hawaii, and there they visited the summit of the Mauna Kea volcano at 14,000 feet to watch the sunset and a star show, then they visited the active volcano Kilauea to see fresh lava flows. They had a great time, and hope to return to the Hawaiian Islands soon.

When Eddie and Grace Hill got home, they told the Ensminger Family how great California was. So Katie's sister and brother-in-law brought their 3 kids out to visit. After a 5 hour plane ride, Parker and the twins were ready for some adventures. Their agenda included the Travel Town Museum in Griffith Park, Underwood Farms, Santa Barbara, and Malibu. They enjoyed the beach twice and Parker met a "surf-dude." Abbie bonded with Belle and Andrew played in Shawn's fountain. We also celebrated Parker and Casey's birthdays.

Katie's parents decide to get out of the heat and humidity of the South for a visit to the mild temperatures of California. This was their first visit to Southern California to see Katie and Shawn. In addition to trying some great restaurants, the group saw "Wicked" at the Pantages Theater, toured the Reagan Library in Simi Valley, explored the downtown of Santa Barbara, and of course, had a beach visit.

Shawn and Katie make their first trip down to San Diego and who should they run into...the Feagins! Together they visited the San Diego Wild Animal Park and Sea World. The Wild Animal Park is a unique display of the animals in their re-created, but natural habitats. Sea World is a fun place with all the animals of the ocean. Our favorite was the Clyde and Seamore show and who could forget Shamu. Something very exciting occurred on this trip, but you'll have to ask Shawn and Katie for the details.

Though our usual family "get-together" is Labor Day, this year we had to move up the traditional gathering to Memorial Day. The Lake House was busting with the Hills, Ensmingers, Burnhams, and Harris Families. There were several events to celebrate: Shawn's dad's new lung, Robert and Laurie's engagement, and Shawn's 30th Birthday. The food was excellent, the water activities abundant, and the family time precious. Will Labor Day be able to compete?

Shawn went down to Trestles for a surf trip with Jeremy Chaffin, Russ Shubin, Jon Downing, Randy Whitfield, Doug Lotz, Jubal Marlatt, and Dean Farris. They stayed on Camp Pendleton at San Onofre, with a view of Churches right outside. They surfed for four days, as a south swell built to make each day better than the last. They surfed spots as far south as Cardiff Reef, up to just below Lowers.

Shawn & Katie met Katie's family at Squaw Valley, California for a few days of skiing and snowboarding. While they were there it snowed 3 feet of new snow on an already deep 6-12 ft. base. It was a great time to be with family and play in the snow.

Shawn, Katie & Belle spent Thanksgiving exploring their new home state, California. During the extended weekend they visited Pinnacles National Monument, Santa Cruz, Half Moon Bay (and the famous Mavericks big-wave surf spot), Monterey Bay, Hearst Castle, and Cambria. During their trip, they saw some amazing man-made and natural sights including lighthouses, landscapes and wildlife. The most beautiful landscape views were seen along the Big Sur section of the Pacific Coast Highway. The wildlife seen included sea lions, harbor seals, and elephant seals. Just a month after moving to Southern California, on 10/21/07, Shawn & Katie woke to strong and hot Santa Anna winds blowing outside, and news of a wildfire in Malibu. As they watched the local areal coverage, the camera showed the fire spreading to Shawn's work, HRL Laboratories, and one of the HRL buildings on fire. That was the last television image they saw that Sunday morning before going to church. Though it was difficult to focus, the fellowship of Faith Community Church gave abundant prayer, encouragement and support. That afternoon, smoke began pouring into their neighborhood from the various fires that had started. Though the fires never got close to their house, Shawn wasn't able to return to work for four days. When he returned, he found the HRL property had been kept relatively safe from the wildfires, but the area around had been almost totally scorched. This wildfire was reportedly the worst in ten years, but Shawn & Katie were affected very minimally. Just add this to the long list of blessings they have to be thankful for. They are also very thankful for all of those who fought these fires, and their prayers go out to those affected.

Shawn graduated from Georgia Tech on August 4th, 2007 with his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering. Shawn & Katie celebrated with their family and Shawn's adviser, Dr. William Alan Doolittle. Shortly afterwards, Shawn accepted a position at HRL Laboratories in Malibu, California, and Katie accepted a position at Ventura County Hematology and Oncology in Oxnard, California. Katie, Shawn, Tracy & Brian threw a surprise 40th anniversary party for their parents, Judy & Gilbert at the Fireman's Hall in Mobile, AL. Lots of family and friends attended to celebrate their 40 years of marriage. There was a slide show that looked back on the years as they grew up, found one another, and built a family. They cut a wedding-style cake together and were presented with several gifts from their loved-ones.

Shawn & Katie visited Vail with Katie's parents, Eddie & Grace, in late January for four days of skiing and snowboarding. While it was cold, they experienced nearly four full days of cloudless cobalt-blue skies. Vail rivals Aspen as the most popular ski resort in the US, but it was surprisingly not very crowded on the slopes. The favorite runs included Lost Boy, Poppyfields, Big Rock Park, and the combo Ramshorn to Lions Way to Born Free.

Shawn & Katie went to Myrtle Beach for Katie to attend a CME conference. They stayed at the Hilton at Kingston Plantation, and the conference was organized by the North Carolina Academy of Physician Assistants. Since the conference started at 7am, and ended at 3pm, they had lots of time to enjoy the beach. Shawn Surfed daily while they were there.

Shawn, Katie, & Belle visited Smith Lake in Alabama for Independence Day 2006. There they stayed with Katie's parents, Shawn's brother, sister-in-law, and nephews, and Katie's Uncle Bob, Aunt Mary and Michael.
